The seminar dedicated to journalist Lyra Mc Kee RIP took place on Friday 3rd group.jpgMay 2019 in the Linen Hall Library, Belfast. Gerry Carson, Chairman, Belfast and District branch, National Union of Journalists welcomed everybody to the event. Seamus Dooley, Assistant General Secretary, and Irish Secretary, National Union of Journalists as the senior official in Ireland made the opening presentation in defence of journalism. Patricia Irvine, Chairperson of UNA NI, Founded in 1945, UNA-NI is a non-governmental voluntary grassroots organisation, affiliated to UNA-UK, and member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, spoke of the important work of the United Nations. Jim Boumelha, treasurer European Federation of Journalists, spoke of the work of EFJ. Trevor Birney, Award winning journalist from Fine Point films production of “No stone unturned”, about the Loughlinisland murders spoke about the arrest of himself and his colleague Barry Mc Caffery because of their journalism. Colin Wrafter, former Irish Ambassador to South Africa and Director of Human Rights Unit at the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, spoke of his work with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. A Panel discussion with a question and answer session followed hosted by Angelina Fusco, former BBCNI’s Editor of Television News. Acknowledgements to Carol Conlin, membership secretary, UNA Northern Ireland. A photographic exhibition “News and Views” complied by Gerry Fitzgerald, former Belfast Telegraph photographic editor, opened the exhibition, and on show was the Plaque dedicated to former NUJ Belfast Branch secretary Martin O’ Hagan, murdered by loyalist killers for simply doing his job.
