Climate Change Strike – Belfast style!

Would you want this in your back garden?

Over 4000 people attended the Belfast Climate Change Strike on 20th September 2019. The atmosphere was electric! Kids from St. Dominics School were particularly prevalent, and kindly invited me to share their banner! It was the day Belfast City Council declared a Climate Emergency, recognising that climate change is actually happening.

The objective for the author was to raise the profile of the Sutherland Space Hub and demand a public consultation initiated by the Scottish Government. No one in the crowd knew about the proposal, despite the project managers, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, who state that they are being open about it. This journalist had to resort to the Information Commissioners of Scotland on that occasion as well. Time=money. Even then they didn’t provide it all. Public services must be made accountable for their actions. They have received £50,000 from the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency to manage it but are clearly not being open about the subject. Why, then, does even the Ben Loyal Hotel in Tongue have no details. This journalist has spent four months attempting to extricate information from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency under Freedom of Information and finally received it yesterday. Why the secrecy? Why no proactive intervention by the SNP?

Meanwhile, you can join us at the Sustainable Tourism conference at the Marine Hotel in Ballycastle, north Antrim. Contact us for details.
